EXPORTER SPOTLIGHT: McMillan Cards & Paper

12 November 2020

We wanted to give our delightful and supportive customers an insight into the wonderful world of The Art File. Recently, we shared an insight into two of our licensed artists as part of our Licensor Spotlight blog series – you can read the I Like Birds post here and the Heather Flynn post here – and there are more of those to come. But for now, let us introduce the first instalment in our new Exporter Spotlight blog series!

Introducing McMillan Cards & Paper!

McMillan cards, established in 1987 and operating from Sydney, is an established and respected supplier to the Australian greeting card, gift and homeware market. We thought it would be of interest to our lovely UK customers to see how far and wide The Art File’s products travel! We spoke to McMillan about their working relationship with The Art File, our products, their stockists, and more.

Jenny, the Managing Director of McMillan, gave us an overview of how McMillan started. She told us that “it was an accident in the beginning but then it got to be a passion which has lasted for over 30 years. McMillan nowadays has grown to be a large paper and gift distributor, and is acknowledged as the number 1 boutique supplier to the Australian card market.” Although McMillan provide a huge variety or products, at their heart is what they began with: the beautiful variety of greeting cards they offer to their retailers, including a huge variety cards sourced here in the UK, such as from The Art File.

The Art File first worked with McMillan at the The Art File’s inception and are thrilled to have started a great relationship again in recent years – McMillan said they too are “delighted to be back working together since 2017.” We wanted to know what McMillan’s favourite products of ours were; we always love to know people’s favourites as they often surprise us. Jenny told us that “while the Christmas ranges are always very special, my personal favourite design has been the Goldfish. I love it!” We must agree that the Goldfish gift wrapping collection really stands out and is truly unique. On the topic of our gift bags and gift wrap, Jenny went on to say “we love The Art File bag and wrap stories; they are innovative, on trend, and very classy, and have actually inspired McMillan to work with this product after having always avoided bags and rolled wrap in all our long history.” We are certainly glad to have been able to convert some industry experts to the wonders of beautiful gift bags and gift wrap!

Next, we wanted to know more about McMillan’s top stockists who also love presenting The Art File’s products to customers. McMillan have a diverse collection of retailers, gathered over 3 decades of trading, including national chains, independent card retailers, gift stores, homeware stores, books shops, garden centres, and children’s stores. We asked if they had a favourite they could mention, and they said “our favourites are those retailers who take the whole story from The Art File and give justice to it. They often choose the collection for special window displays. We are lucky to have these retailers spread over Australia so it’s hard to name them all, but Paper Republic is a standout; an amazing paper store in Melbourne in the trendy suburb of Camberwell. Another is the very beautifully designed Paperjamm shop in the fabulous Indooroopilly (J) shopping centre, a suburb of Brisbane.” It’s safe to say the knowledge that our products are displayed proudly in shop windows across Australia is really special.

McMillan said “we have enjoyed very positive growth in only a few years working with just part of The Art File’s extensive range of products, and they are now a key supplier. The figures continue to build even with COVID restrictions, as retailers appreciate the quality of product and design. The seasonal offerings, especially Christmas, have worked very well in Australia even with our reversed climate.” It’s great to hear that people with such different Christmas traditions (due to the differing climate and environment at this time of year) can still find something perfect within our Christmas offering for their festive card-sending needs.

Lastly, McMillan kindly commented on “how well organised The Art File’s company structure is and how professionally they present their products: always having samples available for our shows; always providing great images for our online sales; and always hitting or even creating the latest trends.” Thank you, McMillan! Jenny ended our chat by saying “really, The Art File is a leader in our industry, but they have still been able to maintain that special, personal touch in both their relationships and products. They are supportive and it is a pleasure to work with everyone there.”
