An Eco Update from The Art File
Over the last year, The Art File has been carefully working towards significantly reducing our single-use plastic. We have worked closely with our customers, in order to understand their concerns around the key advantages and disadvantages of making such changes to our products.
Our biggest push in making these changes can be seen in our Christmas collections for 2020. As well as producing beautiful, high-quality greeting card and gift wrap collections, we have also significantly re-designed our packaging, in order to do our bit to protect the planet from plastic pollution.
In June 2019, The Art File successfully launched our first two ‘naked’ greeting card collections at PG Live. Being on the market in a range of retailers large and small across the UK, these particular collections gave us the vital feedback required in order to deliver an environmental strategy that both significantly reduced our single use plastic, and yet still gave retailers the ultimate decision when it comes to how they want to receive their stock.
From there, all 10 of our Everyday greeting card collections were launched unwrapped (also known as ‘nested’ or ‘naked’) as standard in January 2020. We also made it possible for customers to order these collections clasped (a specially designed easy peel branded clasp that keeps the card and envelope neatly together) or cello wrapped, in order to keep the agency and choice of our customers at the heart of everything we do.
We wanted to fully cement our eco efforts in our Christmas offering, and we’re proud of the redesign of all packaging across our Christmas 2020 collection. This redesign consists of offering single Christmas cards unwrapped, removing acetate from over two thirds of our boxed products, and ensuring any acetate we do use is made from 70% recycled material and is simultaneously fully recyclable.
Our Luxury Christmas Boxes, which picked up ‘Best Christmas Box’ at the most recent Henries Awards, are an essential part of any retailer’s festive offering, and for 2020 was launched in stunning new acetate-free packaging. Our card wallets have also been given a packaging upgrade – for 2020, they will be protected in a stylish, boxed alternative to plastic acetate packaging. The popular Trio Boxes are now also 100% recyclable, a vast improvement from the previous acetate-based box. We’re thrilled that already sales for our newly formatted products with 100% recyclable packaging have been incredibly strong, including these Trio Boxes. Our FORM boxes are packaged in 70% recycled material and all the packaging is again completely recyclable. Most of our Christmas singles will be unwrapped (or naked) as standard, although a small number will remain wrapped as standard due to delicate features in the design. As always, our singles will also be available clasped or wrapped, so that we can continue to fulfil the wishes of each one of our trade customers.
The Art File will continue to work closely with its suppliers and customers to further develop our environmental strategy going into 2020 and beyond, as well as increasing the support and service to our customers through this positive challenge that faces our industry, and our planet.
